IN SEARCH OF PERFECTION。。。?

A company get-together reunites 26-year-old Tsugumi with her high school crush, Itsuki。 In the years they've been apart, Itsuki has realized his dream of becoming an architect--but along the way, he's also suffered a spinal cord injury that's left him in a wheelchair。 Seeing Itsuki again rekindles Tsugumi's feelings for him。 It also forces her to confront her own hidden prejudices。 Itsuki's disability seems like an intimidating obstacle at first, but soon, Tsugumi discovers that her world feels imperfect without him。

Tsugumi is 26 and works with an interior design company。 She attends a company party one evening and ends up running into her first crush and old friend, Itsuki。 They spend the evening reconnecting but as Itsuki goes to leave for the evening, it is revealed that he was in a car accident in college and is now paralyzed from the waist down。 Tsugumi continually reaches out to him to hang out and get to know one another again, slowly falling for him more and more as her old crush resurfaces。 As Itsu Tsugumi is 26 and works with an interior design company。 She attends a company party one evening and ends up running into her first crush and old friend, Itsuki。 They spend the evening reconnecting but as Itsuki goes to leave for the evening, it is revealed that he was in a car accident in college and is now paralyzed from the waist down。 Tsugumi continually reaches out to him to hang out and get to know one another again, slowly falling for him more and more as her old crush resurfaces。 As Itsuki faces medical issues Tsugumi questions whether she has a strong enough constitution to continue moving forward with her feelings for him, or if loving someone with a disability would be too much for her mental health and general lifestyle。 I thought this was a really well-done manga that shines a light on the role disability plays in romance。 It's not often you find many romances (manga or prose) that tackle talking about this in a non-judgmental way, though thankfully more are being published。 This manga read very honestly and I could see and understand the points of view from all the characters, not just our main couple。 Itsuki is trying to put on a brave face but has resigned himself to being alone forever, whereas Tsugumi believes in the power of love but not so much in herself and her ability to navigate taking care of someone at their worst。 It's a real thing people have to deal with and I think questioning things like that is very natural in a relationship。 Tsugumi is also a bit naïve to the world and the way it treats disabled people, so some of the scenes within the volume open her eyes in a new way to how she and others treat people without thinking。 I enjoyed that this actually felt like a romance taking place between people in their 20s, as most manga skews younger or even when the characters are supposed to be older, gives them a forced sense of innocence that makes it hard to relate to。 This story, while Tsugumi isn't entirely aware of the world around her, depicts that in a more realistic way where she is open and willing to learn and have new experiences rather than constantly being shocked about what is happening around her。 The shock is still there of course, as it would be for anyone, but rather than droning on and on in a will they/won't they they sort of situation, Tsugumi understands and listens when she makes a mistake and tries to better herself, which I thought was nicely done。 As an able-bodied person, I can't comment about how realistically it portrayed life for someone in a wheelchair, but I thought the whole overall volume was done well and made me interested in continuing to read the series。 Blog / Twitter / Instagram 。。。more

This reader had no idea。 Cannot wait to see where the romance moves forward, the art is also whimsical and dreamy。 。。。more

I rarely read mangas, mostly because I really miss the inner monologues when reading graphic novels and the like。 However, when I saw this series on my timeline and saw in reviews that the romance wasn't sugercoated and that this wasn't a "your wheelchair doesn't make a difference" story, I got quite curious and I wanted to see for myself if this was the kind of romance I was looking for。Although I still think I would have cried my eyes out if this had been a written novel, I really loved this s I rarely read mangas, mostly because I really miss the inner monologues when reading graphic novels and the like。 However, when I saw this series on my timeline and saw in reviews that the romance wasn't sugercoated and that this wasn't a "your wheelchair doesn't make a difference" story, I got quite curious and I wanted to see for myself if this was the kind of romance I was looking for。Although I still think I would have cried my eyes out if this had been a written novel, I really loved this story。 The characters were realistic, the issues were realistic, the dialogues were realistic, at times the book was quite confronting and it did not make life in a wheelchair seem easier, prettier or better than it truly is。 I have to admit that the reading order confused me at times (recognize the non-manga reader。。。), but I'm sure that when I continue with the rest of the series I will completely figure it out at some point! I at least know it's worth it! 。。。more

What a deeply moving, thoughtful, and well-executed volume! This was probably the best introductory volume of any manga I've ever read。 Every chapter hit the mark。 I almost cried to all of this。 They were so bittersweet。 Sad, but a realistic depiction of someone's life living with disability。 And the fact that the FL never stopped loving the ML since high school。。。。I really loved everything about the story。The art is another problem though。 Admittedly I hate the drawing style。 It's very rudiment What a deeply moving, thoughtful, and well-executed volume! It's not often you see a manga with a main character with a physical disability, but I think that after the popularity of manga such as A Silent Voice we're going to start seeing more。 I'm hoping that Perfect World gets the same love that A Silent Voice did。 This was really sweet and showed a lot of the issues that couples who have different physical abilities often go through。 From mourning the loss of a body that was once able, to pain that won't stop, this really hit the mark。 I loved the add It's not often you see a manga with a main character with a physical disability, but I think that after the popularity of manga such as A Silent Voice we're going to start seeing more。 I'm hoping that Perfect World gets the same love that A Silent Voice did。 This was really sweet and showed a lot of the issues that couples who have different physical abilities often go through。 From mourning the loss of a body that was once able, to pain that won't stop, this really hit the mark。 I loved the addition of the struggles our main character goes through when asking for a wheelchair ramp。 It's true - most buildings aren't built with disabled people in mind。 。。。more

Upon hearing of the concept and finding there are not a lot of characters in manga and anime with spinal cord injuries, I decided to give this a try。 I was pleasantly surprised by the information they showed, and saddened by the ableism that was also shown。 The main couple are written in a way that makes their chemistry, compelling to read about。

Chantal

I liked the pairing, some of the stereotyping bothered me a bit, but it may also be a cultural thing。 I am willing to give the next books a shot though because I like the characters themselves。

Ashley

Good first volume。 Realistic insight to living with a disability。 Curious how their relationship will unfold。 Genuinely enjoyed this & looking forward to continuing the series。 Second volume up next!

wow there sure are a lot of reviews for this from abled people talking about what great disabled rep it is! that's always a good sign and not a red flag, right?first things first, I'm physically disabled and a wheelchair user。 however, I am an ambulatory wheelchair user, which means I can walk if necessary。 at the moment my mobility has become more limited and I almost exclusively use a walker or wheelchair when I'm able to leave my house, but inside my home I do not use any assistive devices ex wow there sure are a lot of reviews for this from abled people talking about what great disabled rep it is! that's always a good sign and not a red flag, right?first things first, I'm physically disabled and a wheelchair user。 however, I am an ambulatory wheelchair user, which means I can walk if necessary。 at the moment my mobility has become more limited and I almost exclusively use a walker or wheelchair when I'm able to leave my house, but inside my home I do not use any assistive devices except for a stool in the kitchen if I'm going to be making something that takes more time。 this is for chronic pain reasons related to previous back injuries。 I have full use of my legs and have no nerve damage。so I picked this manga up specifically because of the disability angle。 I'm working on curating a list of manga with disabled characters, and happened to see this one when shopping online。 after giving it a read, I'm not sure if it's one I'd want to include and recommend to other disabled people。。。this is told mainly from the perspective of the able-bodied person in the relationship。 a lot of it is about her realizing the daily hardships of wheelchair users as well as more specific health problems that people with spinal injuries deal with。 there is a lot of casual ableism thrown around and the abled MC contributes to this in the beginning。 we don't get a lot of insight into how the disabled love interest feels about things, which is disappointing。 there are topics related to disability that are very briefly touched on, such as inaccessible buildings and chronic pain, but it is VERY brief。 oftentimes the disabled character is shown to "keep moving forward" with a positive attitude, which was annoying to read。 there is some negativity present, and he admits that he hasn't fully accepted himself as a disabled person, but for the most part a lot of ableism is swept under the rug。 one part in particular that bothered me was at his architect job。 when a customer says they don't want a ramp in the front of the building that would make it accessible for wheelchair users, he attempts to push back but is told to back off by his superiors。 after this incident, we don't get any anger from him。 the abled MC muses on how hard it must be for him to deal with that, but there is no deeper discussion to explore the frustration and anger a disabled person would feel at being told to their face that they aren't considered a worthy customer to this business。 too often it felt like the love interest was playing the role of the "good cripple" where he takes ableist microaggressions with a smile and positive attitude。 there is also a comment made later by the MC where she comments on how she often "forgets" that the love interest is disabled which made me roll my eyes。 I have been with my partner for several years and lived with him before we started dating and he has never "forgotten" my disability, especially out in public。 if he did, I would be very angry! while there are certain accommodations he makes now without thinking twice about it, that doesn't mean he's "forgotten" my disability。 my disability is a large part of my identity, and because of the ableist society we live in it's something I deal with daily。 any relationship is made up of compromise, and being in a relationship with a physically disabled person requires a lot of compromise and constant learning。 adjusting to living with a disabled person means being aware of all kinds of new things you would never notice about the world before, so "forgetting" that they're disabled just doesn't come into the picture!as far as other criticisms, I felt the art was pretty weak and didn't add much at all to the story。 there were certain beats the story hit that felt predictable and boring, and overall the entire thing felt very rushed。 we don't get many reasons why the MC falls in love with the love interest, and their relationship felt hollow because of it。 meeting the high schooler who is a wheelchair user and the girlfriend that wouldn't leave him alone (after a year??? she kept going to his house every day for a YEAR after he stopped talking to her? I don't care if you dated, that's stalker behavior!) provided at least an interesting storyline with the basketball team。 however, I wish we could have seen the love interest interact with more disabled people, including disabled friends。 it would have been good for the MC to be in a position where she's the odd one out and gain that perspective。all-in-all, this doesn't work on any of the levels its meant to。 the romance angle is weak and the disability representation is lackluster。 while its nice that there's romance manga out there with disabled love interests, this sets a very low bar when it comes to quality。 。。。more

I have a copious amount of respect for this manga for multiple reasons though if not mostly for the fact that despite this being a romance manga, the mangaka does not once romanticize Ayukawa’s disability nor the complications he faces from it。 Instead, she invites readers to experience through Kawana’s feelings and eyes, all the difficulties that come with loving someone with a disability and that it isn’t ever as mild as it may seem nor is the disabled person always handling it as well as they I have a copious amount of respect for this manga for multiple reasons though if not mostly for the fact that despite this being a romance manga, the mangaka does not once romanticize Ayukawa’s disability nor the complications he faces from it。 Instead, she invites readers to experience through Kawana’s feelings and eyes, all the difficulties that come with loving someone with a disability and that it isn’t ever as mild as it may seem nor is the disabled person always handling it as well as they may make it look to others。 It truly does deserve praise for that, as well as for the relationship she builds between these two characters。 I like their personalities as well, and I can tell that she put the most thoughtful care into Ayukawa。 However… it feels like Kawana, as a character, wasn’t well fleshed out。 She feels almost like a blank slate main character, one made perfect for self-inserting。 I can certainly understand how that’s a good thing here, but I do wish that Kawana had more of a realistic personality for a grown adult。 Or perhaps…she does, and I’ve never met someone like her yet。 Though, that’s not what bothered me the most。 The entire story-telling and all the transitions made the manga feel like the mangaka was trying to piece together fragmented memories。 I don’t think that was the intent, as she mentions at the back of the book that this is an amateur first volume, and I cut her slack for that as well as for how well other parts of this manga were put together。 But it just still feels odd to me, and is ever so slightly off-putting, but easily forgivable for the best parts of this manga。 P。S。 something I found a little funny or amusing was how the English version of this manga was released in 2020, five years after its release in Japan。 Why is this funny? Because the characters in it talk about the 2020 Olympics and how they hope for the future and hope to see that year together。 Well… Kawana does, at least, in her inner monologue。 。。。more

I went into Perfect World worried it would end up being offensive and cringey, and it ended up almost making me cry twice。 If you're looking for a soft-spoken but challenging narrative that makes you confront your own biases, then look no farther。 I wouldn't read this if you're only looking to read a romance because this is rather depressing and also doesn't show signs of developing "romance" until later issues。I'm so happy this was given the respect and development it deserves by diving into as I went into Perfect World worried it would end up being offensive and cringey, and it ended up almost making me cry twice。 If you're looking for a soft-spoken but challenging narrative that makes you confront your own biases, then look no farther。 I wouldn't read this if you're only looking to read a romance because this is rather depressing and also doesn't show signs of developing "romance" until later issues。I'm so happy this was given the respect and development it deserves by diving into aspects of disabled life that able-bodied people never have to think about on the daily。It was also nice to see the main love interest be honest and introspective about whether or not she's (either consciously or subconsciously) trying to form a relationship with this guy because of one of the following:a) she thinks he's attractive b) she's pity dating himc) she feels a genuine connection The story never gives you any clear-cut answer to this question, and I appreciated that。 。。。more

I think this is a great choice to start off with when deciding a book series。 Perfect world deals with the problems within a disabled relationship。 This story shows the ups and downs of the main characters。 Even if you decided to only read the first volume you could still enjoy the series。 I highly recommend reading more of the books though。 I am not done with the series yet, but I already love it。
